Kansanshi Dynamos FC secured a hard-fought victory in Chipata, edging out Chipata United 1-0 in a week-nine match of the ZPL National League.
This crucial win, following a two-day journey to Chipata, allows the Solwezi-based side to retain their second spot on the log, now just three points behind league leaders Konkola Blades.
The gameโs only goal came from Tranquilin Kalonji Mwepu, who made a remarkable return after missing two matches due to illness. Mwepuโs 29th-minute strike was enough to seal the victory for Kansanshi, with Dalitso Lungu providing the assist by outpacing a Chipata United defender and delivering a perfect pass to Mwepu.
Head coach Zeddy Saileti coach not hide his excitement over the win, stating that it boosts the team’s confidence and motivation moving forward. He also acknowledged that Chipata United were tough opponents, defending well to keep the scoreline tight.
Notable action began in the 20th minute when the hosts missed an opportunity to take the lead. In the 45th minute, Chipata United were awarded a penalty after Marcel Kalonda fouled Gibson Banda in the box. However, Banda skied his shot over the bar, wasting the chance to level the match.
Kansanshi Dynamos made tactical adjustments in the second half, with Ackson Ndalama making way for Timothy Sakala, and Rabson Mumba replacing an injured Mathews Mwale at halftime. The hosts nearly equalized in the 61st minute when Gibson Bandaโs header from close range narrowly missed the target.
In the 70th minute, Dalitso Lungu picked up a knock and was replaced by George Chisala. Kansanshi continued to create chances, with Rabson Mumba making a brilliant run into the box in the 76th minute to set up Mwepu, but Mwepu missed the connection. Two minutes later, Mwepu had another golden opportunity but sent his shot just over the bar. Rabson had a final chance in the 82nd minute, but his effort went straight to the goalkeeper.
Coach Saileti made one final substitution, bringing on Dave Daka for Tranquilin Mwepu. The match ended 1-0, with Kansanshi Dynamos moving up to 20 points, three behind leaders Konkola Blades (23 points) and two ahead of third-placed Mpulungu Harbour (18 points).
The Mabanga Boys will now embark on a two-day journey back home to Solwezi, where they will begin preparations for their Week 10 fixture against Chirundu United at Independence Stadium.
Coach Saileti have also extended their heartfelt gratitude to the loyal fans who travelled far to cheer them on, providing much-needed support throughout the match.
